L’Amerique suivant les derniers…
Issued c.1738-70, Paris. Engraved by Faure. (based on 1680 map by Herman van Loon.
Charming early to mid-18th century engraved map with lovely full hand color.
Of note for how California is boldly and clearly depicted as an island, with no sign of Alaska in the northwest. Note the open undefined continental outline along the south polar regions, hinting at an undiscovered southern continent.
Original fold lines as issued.
Overall clean and attractive example, any age flaws are minor and don't detract visually. Left blank margin trimmed right to neat line at bottom 1/2 of sheet as issued (to facilitate original folding), now nicely extended with old paper.
Map still displays well and looks great, minor wrinkling or light extraneous creasing as often seen on miniature folding maps of this era.
Sheet Measures c. 8 3/8" H x 6 1/2" W.
Engraved Area Measures c. 7" H x 5 3/8" W.
