Holy Land Palestine Cyprus Middle East sailing ship 1599 Ruscelli map RosaccioBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
Soria et Terra Santa Nouva Tavola.
(Holy Land- Palestine ancient- Mesopotamia- Arabia Deserta- Cyprus)
Issued Venice, 1599 by Giovanni Lorenzo D'Anania / Ruscelli & Rosaccio. Printed by heirs of Melchoir Sessa. Fourth Edition, second issue using the re-engraved 1582 plate in 1598-99. Italian text on verso.
This scarce late issue used the 1561 plate (a close examination of minute details reveals this), but the plate was not used again after this 1599 printing and this map apparently has no further appearances or printings.
In near VG or better condition*, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, the image is clean, well preserved and very attractive. Early sailing ship seen in Mediterranean.
*please note- there is a very small hole along the middle fold-line which has been backed with matching paper and is now all but invisible to the eye when viewing the map. It is very easy to overlook or forgive.
Paper and image remains clean and well preserved with a fine patina and visual appeal.
Original fold line as issued.
Sheet measures c. 13" x 9 1/4".
Engraved area measures c. 9 1/4" x 7 1/4".
