North Pole Artic Ocean Frisland island myth 1628 Mercator minor map early colorBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
(Northern Hemisphere, North Pole, Artic Ocean, Greenland, Scandinavia, Russian Empire).
Issued 1628, Amsterdam by J. Janssonius for Mercator. Engraved by van der Keere or A. Goos (see Koeman below). Latin text on reverse as issued.
Nice early 17th century engraved map with what appears to be early attractive hand color, possibly/ likely original.
This map incorporates the knowledge obtained from the many then recent voyages of discovery searching for a Northwest & East passage.
Note off the coast of Greenland at lower left the mythical island of Frisland, Iceland placed literally almost touching Greenland. Anian Straits between coasts of America and Asia are shown middle right edge.
A scarce map, newly re-engraved from earlier versions issued in Mercator's atlas minor and thus a variant to others of a similar title.
Remains a nice looking example with a pleasing age patina. An old repair at bottom right corner of unknown type or age, appears to be some form of translucent paper. Most of this repair would mat out, leaving just a small area of slight discoloration. Any age flaws mostly minor and easy to overlook or forgive.
