North & South America Caribbean Sea European Colonies c.1655 Ortelius scarce mapBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
Americae Sive Novi Orbis Nova Descriptio.
(North America, South America, Caribbean Sea, Sailing Ships, European Colonies, New Spain).
Issued c. 1655, Venice by Turrini.
Charming, scarce and attractive well-preserved 17th century engraved map with lovely hand color. A re-issue of Marchetti's 1598 plate done mid-17th century.
The map depicts some fascinating and glaring geographical errors. Both North & South America are inaccurately shown, and, to the East, "Noue Guine" or the East Indies is depicted as part of Antarctica, here names "Tierra del Fuego" beside the simple strapwork cartouche.
Remains a nice looking example with a pleasing age patina. Any age flaws mostly minor and easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse as always.
Sheet Measures c. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2".
Engraved Area Measures c. 4" x 3".
