Peshawar

(one of the oldest cities in south Asia- Pakistan- Kyber pass- 1857- Kabul River - mid-19th Century British Colonial rule- urban landscape- city view- human activity- street life- merchants- market- cart- animals- stream)

Issued 1857, London-for ILN
[ as a Supplement to the weekly large format newspaper "Illustrated London News"].

These types of supplemental color printed urban view sheets are almost always lacking when old original issues of the periodical are found, whether single or in bound volumes. All of them (and there were perhaps a few dozen different ones at most in total) are scarce today. This one is clearly printed from several stones, the visual effect pleasing and utterly unique to this mid 19th century era of creating a large color print like this entirely by hand, one at a time. Should be hanging in a public city building in this Indian city as a relic of a long-past historical era.

An actual antique/ vintage printed sheet of paper, not a modern copy or reprint of an old print. The sheet could show signs of age difficult to capture digitally, but if we are offering it for sale you can be 100% certain it is entirely worthy of ownership by even the most discerning collector or dealer.

A picture is worth a thousand words. The scan is a major part of the item description. Please examine it closely, as what you see is what we will send you.

[note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.].

Sheet shows signs of age, has a repaired short tear in the side blank margin, slight soiling or thumbing visible in blank margins- but still remains well preserved, keeping in mind it is not modern or new, so some minor flaws to paper are to be expected. All is hopefully visible within the zoomable scan- please look it over.

Paper and image remains overall clean & sound. Old maps & prints often display small minor repairs on the back, could have uneven blank margins, might have extraneous fold-lines or other small minor age flaws which do not detract from the visual appeal or value. Condition is carefully considered in arriving at our price.

Attractive and appealing antique color (chromo) print entirely worthy of hanging for display.

A style and manner of depiction entirely unique to this era.

Sheet measures c. 10 1/2 " H x 15 1/4 " W.

Printed area measures c. 8 3/4" H x  12 3/8" W

Blank verso, clearly separately printed and inserted as a supplemental sheet into some (most?) original examples. Today only very infrequently encountered as a printed image.
