South America 1633 Salzburg rare miniature map fragment w/ missionaries vignette
Brian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints

America oder West Indien ..
Issued 1733, Salzburg.
MAP FRAGMENT ONLY- AS SEEN.
Rare early 18th century (1/2) miniature map with original hand color. Note the monk's shining cross color lines.
Signs of age, handling, small staining.
Map is defective and only a fragment as seen (basically entire bottom half plus a bit along the right side up to the coast of Africa & Cape Verde Islands (named)). However, given the sheer rarity of the map, since all of South America is present with the great large pictorial vignette, offered here as a noble fragment.
A map survival most collectors of So. America maps would not have in any form. Great vignette title with a bunch of pious missionary type dudes in robes getting ready to colonize and convert the hell out of every place they encountered or could manage to reach and set up shop.
Original centerfold.
Remains attractive.
Very scarce/ rare miniature copper engraved map due to imprint location and date.
Map sheet measures c 3” H (to fold line) x 5 1/4” W.
