U.S. Civil War Battle Fields Map 1867 Colton large folding pocket map datesBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
Map of Military Operations During the War of 1861-1865.
(American Civil War Battle map).
Issued 1867, New York, Coltons Geographical Establishment for E.B. Treat, Publisher of salesman sold books, etc.
Fine and uncommon mid-19th century lithographed map, with full original hand color.
Printed on bank-note bond paper typical of pocket maps of this era.
Fascinating overprinting of the NY publisher at top center by alteration of the lithographic stone. Colton's commercial supplemental details added within the plate at top left in addition to the typical plate imprint lower left (inside the decorative scroll leaf border). This added promotional business imprint states they also hand color the maps, something rarely seen and likely indicating the map was also intended to be sold separately, hence the bond paper (thin, light weight, sturdy and readily foldable).
Extensive four column chronological table lower right, identifying dozens of key battle locations with dates. Red dots correspond to battle fields.
Light uniform paper age toning, numerous extraneous fold lines as typical, minor spotting or small staining, overall remaining clean - a pleasing and well preserved visual example.
Sheet measures c. 19 1/8" x 24 1/2".
Printed area measures c. 18" x 23 1/2".
