World Map Distorted North America Huge Southern Continent 1655 Ortelius rare mapBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
Typus Orbis Terrarum.
(World Map, North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia).
Issued c. 1655, Venice by Turrini.
Charming, attractive well-preserved 17th century engraved map with lovely hand color. Scarce re-issue of Marchetti's 1598 plate done mid-17th century.
We note that the North American continent in particular is decidedly out of proportion and geographically inaccurate with the large bulbous westward protrusion. Also note the enormous southern continent, the Nile River in Africa with sources deep in the interior. No sign of Australia, the North Pole labelled as an "incognita" (unknown) land mass.
Remains a nice looking example with a pleasing age patina. Any age flaws mostly minor and easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse.
Sheet Measures c. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2".
Engraved Area Measures c. 4" x 3".
