ABC Book Alphabets Pictures of Birds 1837 Butler rare woodcut juvenile chap bookBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Illustrated Books, Children's Books, Alphabet Books, Birds).
The ABC Book with Pictures of Birds.
Published 1837, Northampton, Massachusetts by John Metcalf.
16 pages (likely incomplete) plus wrappers. Text in English. Illustrated with 15 different woodcuts.
Publisher's illustrated paper wrappers, binding home repaired long ago with front cover hand stitched upside down to text block (thus used as a rear cover).
First alphabet A-Z is complete (capital letters), the second series of a-z in lower case letters begins with "a" and stops with "o", thus incomplete thru "z", so likely 2 final leaves.
A curious and fascinating survival. Shows clear evidence of having once been valued enough by a previous owner to carefully stitch it back together once it had been read to the point of literally falling apart. This means the 2 final leaves were already missing by the time the repair was done, likely in the 19th century (this type of saw-tooth home repair is quite often seen on chapbooks of this era).
Item is physically old and shows some heavy clear signs of handling and time as is typical with any paper juveniles of this vintage which still survive (mostly by chance). Item is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding age worn, old damp staining to booklet, remains overall appealing even in this condition as a rare juvenile ABC.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a unique age patina, the age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
