464 pages. Text in English. Engraved frontis portrait and half title protected by original tissue guard. Profusely illustrated throughout, c. 300 illustrations which include many full page engraved plates and a large folding map.
Volume 1 (only, of 2). Perfect example to marry with a stray vol. 2 in a similar binding.
Period deluxe full leather morocco binding, raised bands, gilt title lettering, elaborate embossed cover designs, all edges gilt.
Binding remains clean, tight, and sound- a beautiful survival with just small minor scattered scuff spots or rubbing.
Text block remains overall clean, and displays a pleasing age patina.
Book remains well preserved and attractive on the shelf. It displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, the age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
