Extra-Illustrated throughout with 89 extra (mostly) engraved plates, some 18th century. A prolific assortment of old images relating to the author and his life and times are bound throughout.
A one of a kind set with a profusion of original engraved plates, created specially for the original owner.
Period full morocco leather bindings, raised bands, gilt ruled compartments, gilt title lettering, gilt ruled covers, top edges gilt, marbled end papers.
Set is well over 100 years old and the bindings shows some signs of handling and time. Set is not new or in "new" condition.
Bindings gently age worn, leather rubbed but still supple, joints slightly scuffed with small flaking, slight hairline cracks to font joints, all covers firm, strong and tightly held, small chip at spine head of vol. 2, set remains overall bright, clean and very attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, light to moderate scattered age spotting, internally still fresh, clean, well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
