Flora's Interpreter: or, the American Book of Flowers and Sentiments, by Mrs. Sarah Josepha Hale.
Published 1838, Boston by Marsh, Capen & Lyon.
262 [264] pages. Text in English. Hand colored frontis piece protected by original tissue guard, one other hand colored floral plate. Detailed extensive index at rear.

Period embossed full leather binding, gilt title lettering. Wonderful example of this early American publishers binding type (stamped on reverse Philadelphia, binder's name rubbed and unreadable but ending in "N"). Harp sit above a peacock all set within an ornate surrounding framework of floral scrolls and bursting sun rays.

Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.

Binding gently age worn but still very appealing, mostly clean, leather lightly rubbed but still supple, board tips worn down, still nicer than typical, remains overall attractive as an object.

Text block paper is gently toned, several pages or signatures sprung and thus protruding slightly from text block, internally still well preserved, sound. Some staining from early flowers and vegetation having been inserted in places where it presumably applied.

Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
