French Art of 18th Century 1914 Chiswick Burlington Club Limited Ed. plate bookBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
(Old Books, Early 20th Century Books, Visual Arts, Art History, French Art, Illustrated Books).
French Art of the Eighteenth Century.
Published 1914, London by Burlington Fine Arts Club. Chiswick Press. Book was privately printed upon subscription by members of the club, very limited edition thus.
95 pages. Text in English. 52 plates protected by original tissue guards. Clearly an enormously expensive book production of the era, a luxury book produced by and for wealthy bibliophiles and art sophisticates in the club.
Book is a detailed chronicle of the Summer 1913 Exhibition of paintings, pastels, drawings, furniture, miniature, porcelain, clocks, snuff boxes, and other examples of French applied arts held at the club.
Publisher's cloth binding, gilt title lettering, deckled edges, top edge gilt, profusion of finely printed plates on heavy paper, each with plate impression visible and tissue guard.
A monumental book and printing production of this early 20th century era, this example surviving in quite clean fresh condition, as if it sat on the same shelf for 100 years and was only seldom handled.
Book is physically old and shows some mostly light and trivial signs of handling and time.
Binding lightly rubbed and age worn with minor spot scuffing, overall clean and attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, internally still fresh, well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail. If you like nicely printed 100 year old art books with lots of plates, you will love this book.
