(Old Books, 18th Century Books, Leather Books, Jonathan Swift, Collected Works).

The Works of Jonathan Smith.
Published 1756, Edinburgh & Glasgow for A. Kincaid & A. Donaldson. (Volume 1 is married to the set, published 1704, London for John Nutt).
8 volumes, each c. 400 pages. Text in English.

A wonderful and scarce mid-18th century set which has a much earlier 1704 (Third Edition) volume one "married" to it.

Attractive antiquarian full leather bindings, raised bands, gilt title lettering on contrasting red leather labels.

Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Married set. Volume 1 taken from a different earlier set published in 1704. Please see photos. Volumes 2-8 are all from 1756.

Bindings gently age worn but still appealing, leather and joints scuffed or rubbed with some typical surface crackling, but all the leather remains supple (recently leather dressed), some small minor chipping to spine ends, various scuffs, couple joints cracked or split although all covers remains strongly and firmly attached- this rare set remains overall attractive as a 265+ year old hand-made object.

Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, internally book remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A set which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.

Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this fine and unique set as it survives.

We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly.
