Brian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints

Island of Madera - The Dragon Tree.
(Atlantic Islands, Portuguese Colonies, Madeira, Dragon Tree, Dragon's Blood, Resin).
Issued 1753, London. Engraved by G. Child.
Fine mid 18th century engraved map of this Atlantic island with a giant engraved view of the "Dragon Tree" which has a pot hanging from its branch to collect the "dragon blood" in. With attractive full hand color.
A Fleur-de-lys serves as a compass rose and has rhumb lines radiating from it. Sounding depths are noted as well as anchorage locations. Small symbols indicate the port trading harbor and shoreline.
Remains a nice looking example with a pleasing mellow age patina. Any age flaws mostly minor and easy to overlook or forgive.
