North America Sea of the West de Fonte Fictitious Cartography 1752 Vaugondy mapBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
Carte Generale Des Decouvertes de L'Amiral de Fonte.
(Pacific Ocean, Russia, Siberia, Kamchatka, North America, American West, California, Lake of the West, Baffin Bay, Hudson Bay, Northwest Passage, Arctic Circle, California).
Issued 1752, Paris by Vaugondy.
Mid 18th century engraved folio sheet map with attractive hand color.
One of the most remarkable mappings of the northwest coast of America, extensive details which are mostly erroneous, speculative or wrong. A huge Sea of the West is shown blocked by an island, early fictitious explorers are named, tracks shown in the oceans, etc. A wonderful map.
Remains a nice looking example with a pleasing age patina. Any age flaws mostly minor and easy to overlook or forgive.
Original center fold as issued.
Sheet Measures c. 14 1/2" H x 18 1/4" W.
Engraved Area Measures c. 11 1/2" H x 15" W.
