c. 200 pages. Text in French & German. Profusely illustrated "picture stories" throughout with what is widely considered to be the precursor to modern comic strips. Topffer 's character Monsieur Vieux Bois is shown in his various over the top adventures blending satire, narration, gesture, frantic theatrical physical expression and visual energy.
Period 1/2 oblong leather biding, slightly raised & gilt bands, gilt title lettering, marbled covers & end papers.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is 175 years old and not new or in "new" condition.
Binding gently age worn but still appealing, leather rubbed but still supple, joints slightly scuffed, remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, internally still well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this rare early European pre-cursor to comic books survives.
