(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Decorative Leather Bindings, William Cowper, Collected Poetry).
The Works of William Cowper, Comprising His Poems, Correspondence and Translations, with a Life of the Author by Robert Southey.
Published 1853, London by H.G. Bohn.
2 volumes. 480, 398 pages. Text in English. Engraved frontis and half titles protected by original tissue guards. Illustrated throughout with many engraved plates.
Period 1/2 leather bindings, slightly raised & gilt bands, gilt compartment decorations, gilt title lettering on contrasting red & green leather labels, marbled covers, edges, and end papers.
Mid-19th century 8 volume set with handsome shelf appearance.
Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Set is not new or in "new" condition.
Bindings gently age worn, leather rubbed with surface scuffing or light scratching, but still supple, covers all well attached, some old staining to one spine, still remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is well toned, engraved plates also well toned, internally tight and sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to forgive.
