The Negroes of Kachao preparing ye Maniac Root

(Preparing Cassava root)

Issued London, c. 1778-80 by Middleton.

Charming late 17th century engraved print, with beautiful old hand color.

Decorative floral & ornamental border adds to the visual appeal. Excellent cultural rendering with native huts in background, clear types of vegetation, skirt wraps, men engaged in the labor, tiny numbers correspond to the key at bottom.

The image has a near folk-art feel, a style unique to this time in history. Utterly unlike anything produced today and of modern aesthetic appeal for this very reason.

Mostly clean & well preserved example, trivial blank margin corner staining & edge toning which visually testifies to the age and patina.

Sheet measures c. 9" x 14 1/4". Small folio sheet.

Printed area measures c. 6 1/2" x 11".
