Admiral de Fonte discoveries Fictional Mer de l'Ouest 1752 de L'Isle large map
Brian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & PrintsCarte Generale des Decouveretes de L'Amiral de Fonte.
(Pacific Ocean, Russia, Kamchatka, Japan, North America, Lake of the West, Fictional Cartography, Admiral de Fonte).
Issued 1752-79, Paris by De L'Isle.
Mid 18th century engraved map with attractive hand color.
Fantasy cartography at it's finest, from the title to the details. Note the huge erroneous Mer de L'Ouest with islands above California, everything else around it hypocryphal and distorted. Alaska is utterly unrecognizable. Numerous engraved notes, 18th century tracks of nautical voyages acrosso the Pacific and along the coasts, the inset at top left showing a map of land features described by this "Admiral" de Fonte.
Remains a nice looking example with a pleasing age patina. Any age flaws mostly minor and easy to overlook or forgive.
Original fold lines as issued.
Sheet Measures c. 15 1/4" H x 17 1/2" W.
Engraved Area Measures c. 11 3/4" H x 15" W.
