Africa north coast Libya Sicily Sardinia sea monster 1599 Ruscelli map RosaccioBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
(Africa- Ptolemaic geography)
Issued Venice, 1599 by Giovanni Lorenzo D'Anania / Ruscelli & Rosaccio. Printed by heirs of Melchoir Sessa. Fourth Edition, second issue using the re-engraved 1582 plate in 1598-99. Italian text on verso.
Charming map with sailing ship and large sea monster. Tip of southern Italy seen near top right, Sardinia depicted as west of Sicily.
This scarce late issue used the 1561 plate (a close examination of minute details reveals this), but the plate was not used again after this 1599 printing and this map apparently has no further appearances or printings.
In near VG or better condition, small brown spot near Amazon River, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, some faint minor offsetting scarcely worthy of mention, overall the image is clean, well preserved and very attractive.
Paper and image remains clean and well preserved with a fine patina and visual appeal.
Original fold line as issued.
Sheet measures c. 13" x 9 1/4".
Engraved area measures c. 9 1/4" x 7 1/4".
