Issued c. 1872, Philadelphia by S.A. Mitchell.
Contains inset map of St. Helena Island. A bold "Unknown Interior" across the middle, Donga seen in the spot where the apocryphal Mts. of the Moon historically were found. Routes of Dr. Livingstone across the continent are labelled. There are numerous variant issues of this map by Mitchell which could readily be collected as the mapping of the continent evolves in the second half of the nineteenth century.
Fine 19th century engraved (lithographed) map, with original hand color. Mitchell maps of this mid-century era were issued with a range of variant decorative borders.
Attractive example, pleasing age patina, overall clean, any minor age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
