Fine and very uncommon large antique wood-engraved Naval print. Art by R. Wells.
(Africa- Egypt- British Rule-Military Intervention 1882 naval campaign).
Issued as a loose supplement print to this well-known weekly periodical, all examples are inherently uncommon/ scarce by virtue of the large folding format, the delicacy of the paper, and the origin source.
Issued 1882 by London Illustrated News.
Four separate detailed wood engraved views of the principle ships involved in the then very recent naval bombardment. Below each ship is the name of the Captain and specifics about the ship. Issued shortly after the events for popular press reporting.
Sheet remains well preserved- shows some signs of age. Uniform age toning, wood pulp stock paper is sound inherently somewhat fragile like all sheets of the era, short tears at centerfold intersection, 2" edge tear left side repaired long ago with cello tape (almost invisible when viewing print).
Remains an attractive and scarce 19th century British military/ tall ship naval print.
Sheet measures c. 30 1/2" W x 21 1/4" H.
Printed area measures c. 28 1/4" W x 19 1/4" H.
Folio. Original fold lines as issued.
