(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Religion, Christianity, Book of Common Prayer, Episcopal Church, Psalms of David).

The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church According to the Use of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Together with the Psalter, or Psalms of David.
Published 1812, Philadelphia by Moses Thomas.
324, 242 pages. Text in English. Engraved plates.

With the fine early engraved armorial bookplate of Levi Hollingsworth (American Revolutionary soldier, Captain of the Philadelphia militia which served under George Washington see wikitree, DAR Patriot ancestor), then extensive hand written gift inscription from his wife, Hannah Hollingworth to her grandson Levi. Levi and Hannah had eight children). We note a striking similarity between the bookplates engraved by Paul Revere (espc. for David Greene, Gardiner Chandler and Epes Sargent).

Attractive antiquarian full leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands & title lettering, gilt compartment decorations, embossed & gilt ruled covers, all edges gilt, marbled end papers.

Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time.

Binding age worn from much use and handling but still appealing, old crease down spine back which displays some slight flaking, leather and joints slightly rubbed but still supple, remains overall very attractive as an object.

Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, internally book remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A book which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.

Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this rare and unique book with an interesting provenance as it survives.

We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly.
