California Island Americas 1738 Macquart miniature hand color map McLaughlin #73
Brian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
L'Amerique suivant les dernieres observations...
(California as an Island).
Issued 1738, Paris. Engraved by Macquart. (based on Macquart's c.1680's prototype).
Of note for the prominent depiction of California as an island. Southern continent seen across the bottom.
Almost identical to McLaughlin #70/3, but clearly a re-engraving of that plate with various minor differences visible.
A charming little map which went through different re-engravings and reissues throughout the 18th century (all with variations in places names used or not, engraved details, etc), all closely following McLaughlin #70/ 72/73.
Light wrinkling, orig. fold lines. Bottom right blank margin trimmed narrow as issued to facilitate framing.
A visually superior example, clean, lovely coloring, displays a pleasant age patina.
Note the vast empty blank northwest portion of North America.
Sheet Measures c. 7 3/4" H x 6 1/4"W.
Engraved Area Measures c. 6 7/8" H x 5 3/8"W.
