Scythia et Tartaria Asiatica.
(Asia, Ancient World, Scythia, Tartary, Ural Mountains).
Issued c.1694, Wolfenbut., Germany for Cluverius. Engraved by M. Hailler.
Lovely late 17th century engraved map with very attractive hand color. A superior visual example.
Scarce map from an uncommon source.
The entire region is rendered in a curious vague, almost primitive manner, The Arabian peninsula is shown covered with mountain ranges and rivers of all sorts. A Giant lake in Southeast Asia feeds a system of four named long rivers down through Thailand, Vietnam, etc. Coast of North America and Alaska shown along the top right, scrolled cartouche at top left. Note the strange thin shape of the Korean peninsula with a curious looking Japan beside it, appearing more like Russian Kamchatka peninsula.
Nice example, any age flaws minor, quite narrow blank margins, especially along the top (still wide enough for matting fine). Original fold line.
Sheet Measures c. 9 1/4" H x 11" W.
Engraved Area Measures c. 8 1/2" H x 10 1/4" W.
