Charleston, S.C. and Its Vicinity.
(Old Prints, Americana, U.S. Civil War, South Carolina, Charleston, Bird's Eye View).
Issued 1863, New York by Virtue, Yorston & Co. Engraved by Ridgeway from a drawing by Wells.
Very attractive and visually dazzling mid-19th century engraved view of this important southern Atlantic coastal port during the Civil War.
Under a magnifying glass countless dozens of individual row houses and buildings are visible, the level of engraved detail difficult to image today. For instance, virtually every tiny house has numerous pinhead size engraved windows on it, a marvel of hand work only rivaled perhaps by delicate brain surgery hand movements, done for stretches of hours at a time. A marvel of skilled hand work.
With superior and atmospherically nuanced hand color which creates a superior visual example.
