Daphne

(Antioch, Syria)

Issued 1683,Paris

Fine original 17th-century [antique] engraved print.

Printed in the late-17th century on quality hand made paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness.

In close to VG [or better] condition: displays normal minor light age toning as typical, trivial scattered small spotting and light soiling; overall the image remains clean and very attractive--- please inspect visual scan closely and note the zoom feature which allows for close inspection [note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws]. Text on verso as issued.

Extracted from a scarce late-17th century reduced format pictorial world atlas which contained countless quaint engraved maps, views and costume plates. These fine plates are widely known within map collecting cirles and sought for their delightful modern visual appeal. This view also appeared in a 1719 German issued version, but those later images were entirely re-engraved in a rather crude and far inferior artistic manner than this one. The 1683 original as found here is very well executed, with nice line detail & shadowing.

Printing method: this charming engraved 1600's image was inked by hand and then pressed onto the sheet, after which it was printed with hand-set movable type font both above the image as well as on the verso.

Great little image entirely worthy of an album or hanging for display. A geographical depiction captured in a manner entirely unique to this era.

The printed area remains visually pleasing, a nice impression of an interesting historic cultural image.

Any minor defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos.

Sheet measures c. 5 3/4" W x 8 1/2" H.

Engraved area measures c. 4 1/4" W x 6 1/4" H.
