A Standard Dictionary of the English Language, Upon Original Plans, ed. by Isaac K. Funk.
Published 1895, London by Funk & Wagnalls Company.
2 volumes. Each c. 1,000 pages. Text in English. Chromolithographed full page plates, countless small line drawings within text throughout.
A monumental set, each volume is thick, large and very heavy.
Period full leather bindings, slightly raised bands, gilt compartment decorations and title lettering, embossed cover designs, gilt ruled cover, marbled end papers, all edges gilt, thumb indexed along fore-edges.
Item is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Item is not new or in "new" condition.
Bindings gently age worn, joints rubbed and slightly scuffed with minor short surface cracking at ends of front joints, some weakening of covers (due to weight of each) although all covers remains firmly attached, set is sound, some old edge staining along top of spine near rear joint of vol. 1, tips of boards worn down a bit, still remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is clean, internally well preserved, little staining or soiling, any flaws of a minor type unworthy of specific mention.
Still attractive on the shelf. Item displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
