Brian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Illustrated Books, Emblems).
Emblems, Divine and Moral, by Francis Quarles.
Published 1824, London by J. Robins and Co.
2 volumes. 154, 155 pages. Text in English. Profusely illustrated throughout with 39 wonderful emblem plates in each volume, for a total of 78 emblems plus an engraved portrait (79 plates total)..
Period 1/4 leather bindings, smooth spines, gilt title lettering, paper covered boards.
Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Set is not new or in "new" condition.
Bindings gently age worn but still appealing, leather rubbed but still supple, joints slightly scuffed, front cover of vol. 2 with a small scrape resulting in loss of paper and leather along the joint, set remains overall attractive as an object. All covers very strongly attached.
Text block paper is gently toned, light foxing, offsetting to facing text leaves of engraved plates, final plates has a short closed edge tear (easy to miss or overlook), internally still well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition. A charming and uncommon set.
