Brian DiMambro- Antique & Vintage Maps, Prints, Books & Gold Coins
A New General and Universal Atlas...by Andrew Dury
Engraved by Mr. Kitchin & others...
(Allegorical engraved atlas title page)
Attractive, interesting and very uncommon original old engraved atlas title page. With pleasing hand color which appears to be old/ original to the period.
Issued 1761, London- Engraved by Benoist
Delightful image with cherubs, a goddess in the sky, sailing ships, topography, earth, ocean & heavens, etc.
An actual antique/ vintage printed sheet of paper, not a modern copy or reprint of an old print. The sheet could show signs of age difficult to capture digitally, but if we are offering it for sale you can be 100% certain it is entirely worthy of ownership by even the most discerning collector or dealer.
A picture is worth a thousand words. The scan is a major part of the item description. Please examine it closely, as what you see is what we will send you.
[note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.].
Sheet is not modern or new, so minor flaws to paper are to be expected. Some light dustiness, toning, age wear or surface spotting/ soiling, all of which is hopefully visible within the zoomable scan. Couple archival tape repairs to centerfold at back to repair a 1 3/4" split at bottom (barely visible to the unaided eye), couple old owners dated inscriptions on back as well, including a woman who owned the atlas in 1766! (Louisa Manners).
Despite the age wear, or perhaps because of it, image displays a nice age patina, perhaps a good analogy is like a fine old circulated gold coin of the era as opposed to a perfectly preserved Mint State one.
Paper and image remains overall clean & sound. Old maps & prints often display small minor repairs on the back, could have uneven blank margins, might have extraneous fold-lines or other small minor age flaws which do not detract from the visual appeal or value. Condition is carefully considered in arriving at our price.
Attractive and appealing old vintage antique print entirely worthy of hanging for display.
A style and manner of depiction entirely unique to this era.
Original centerfold, issued for a very small pocket atlas.
Sheet measures c. 4 7/8" H x 6" W.
Printed area measures c. 4" H x 5" W
