Endermo Harbor
Island of Jesso

Surveyed by order of Commodore M.C. Perry U.S.N.
by Act. Master C.A. Stevens and Midn. R.L. May.

U.S.S. Southampton; J.J. Boyle comdr.

(Japan- mid-19th century American voyage of Discovery & Exploration)

Issued Washington, D.C., 1854 by U.S. Government.

Engraved by Siebert. Drawn by Edward Sels.

Excellent early nautical chart issued by the U.S. Government relating to Japan.

Many sounding depths, anchorage locations, types of interior terrain but apprently no dwellings or buildings.

Excellent large early antique official Asian coastal map from a seminal and transformational American voyage of Discovery and Exploration.

In relatively well preserved condition. All flaws are natural time and age, no neglect or physical mistreatment of the map. Paper is uniformly age toned.

Some old wrinkling along top left edge which is uneven as issued for inset tab placement.

Paper is thin bond type and is sturdier than many U.S. Gov. charts of this era which were often printed on near tissue paper. Some age browning & scattered spotting, toning along some fold lines but paper still retains much structural integrity. All faults attest to age and authenticity and are not offensive visually or physically.

Overall remains a nice original unsophisticated mid-19th century nautical chart relating to Asia & Japan.

Original fold lines as issued.

Sheet measures c. 22" x 16"

Engraved area measures c. 20 1/2" x 14"

Folio.
