Godey's Lady's Book & Magazine.
Published 1842, Philadelphia by Louis A. Godey.
12 monthly issues. 345, 308 pages, profusion of plates and images, some of the fashion plates with original hand color. Text in English.
Profusely illustrated throughout with many steel engravings, wood engraved images, colored paper, hand colored fashion plates (plus a few uncolored ones), etc. Eleven fashion plates present (of 12), contents appear complete, perhaps 3 or 4 engravings lacking due to binding or removal as often seen. Couple engraved plates are defective or torn with repairs. Clearly a book which has seen much browsing and handling.
Period 1/2 fine leather binding, slightly raised & gilt bands, marbled covers.
Text block mostly tight and overall well preserved, some early plates./ leaves detached. Still a nice looking example, joints and covers are a bit rubbed or scuffed, but as the pictures show, still a very handsome looking old book. The leather remains supple.
A profusion of charming and frequently well executed steel engraved and wood engraved plates, plus many line drawings, topics of female fashion and household interest, poetry, fiction, instructional prose, music, etc.
A wonderful illustrated mid-19th century book aimed at the rapidly emerging more urbanized middle class American woman, with a broad range of images on many topics aimed at self-cultivation and edification.
Book Measures c. 10 1/4" H x 6 1/2" W.
