Brian DiMambro(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Travel, Tourism, Russia, Volga River, Illustrated Books, Books with Maps).
Guide to the Volga.
Published 1894, Nizhny-Novgorod, Russian.
252 pages. Text in Russian. Lithographed pictorial map at rear. Well illustrated throughout with 12 full page lithographed view plates plus numerous offset photo view plates. Interesting and scarce suite of early Russian lithographed plates depicting this river region.
Rare 19th century Russian guide book with a pictorial keyed river map at the rear. Bottom edge of map has been shaved slightly with the loss of final two items in the key lists of 78 specific spots.
1/4 cloth binding, pictorial paper covered boards (now heavily rubbed and worn down). Book was neatly rebacked in the past, the binder apparently trimmed down the slightly protruding map edge at this time.
Book is physically well over 125 years old and now shows some clear signs of handling and time. Book is not anything like new or in "new" condition.
Binding age worn, opens to title page, shaken, some pages protruding or loose, otherwise mostly light or inoffensive signs of handling and time but nothing severe or unsightly, book remains overall attractive as an object. Book has fallen apart slightly due to the binding construction strength, which is to say was not very sturdy
Still attractive on the shelf and rare in any condition. The book displays a unique age patina, any age flaws which may be present seem easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail showing how this 19th century Russian pictorial river guide book survives.
