Hague den Haag Nederland city plan c.1890 M.J. Visser Photography old pocket map
Brian DiMambro- Antique & Vintage Maps, Prints, Books & Gold Coins
Plan of the Hague- Plan de la Haye-
(den Haag- Nederland- The Hague, Netherlands- Holland- )
Issued c.1880-90's, den Haag, Netherlands,
Charming and no doubt quite rare small paper 19th century folding pocket map. Issued as promotional advertising by M.J. Visser for his Photography Shop. The text mentions how he is recommended by Baedeker in his guide books.
Spectacular and very uncommon intersection between cartography & photography in 19th century Europe! What other 19th century pocket urban plans can you think of which were issued by businesses selling tourist photos, albums, etc. Talk about a difficult cartographic collection to assemble...
Tri-folded as issued, heavy paper stock, printed in 2 colors.
Charming unique focused urban plan, the selected portion of the city center shown focusing (fair enough) on the shop location. An entirely self-serving map, although one must give him credit for mentioning lots of various other places to be found around him. Brilliant use of contrasting type faces to emphasize the owners location.
Because it was produced for this single merchant, this type of ephemeral cartographic survival can only be loved and admired. Any example still extant is for sure uncommon (rare), as the plan was a fragile folded paper format to begin with and it was issued primarily as a promotional novelty map to attract business to the business selling original touristical photographic images. It was not a plan someone purchased and intended to use multiple times. What comes freely is valued lightly, and thus it would be for such a small paper map like this.
As originally issued long ago, an actual antique/ vintage printed sheet of paper, not a modern copy or reprint.
Note- there are a couple small paper chips at fold-line ends, nothing major.
The paper sheet could show various minor signs of age, but if we are offering it for sale, you can be 100% certain it is entirely worthy of ownership by even the most discerning collector or dealer.
A picture is worth a thousand words. The scan is a major part of the item description. Please examine it closely, as what you see is what we will send you.
[note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.].
Sheet remains well preserved, keeping in mind it is not modern or new, so minor flaws to paper unworthy of specific mention are sometimes to be expected. Some light age wear or surface spotting/ soiling, all of which is hopefully visible within the zoomable scan.
Paper and image remains overall clean & sound. Old maps & prints often display small minor repairs on the back, could have uneven blank margins, might have extraneous fold-lines or other small minor age flaws which do not detract from the visual appeal or value. Condition is carefully considered in arriving at our price.
Great old vintage antique map entirely worthy of hanging for display.
A cartographic depiction captured in a manner entirely unique to this era.
Sheet measures c. 11 3/4" H x 6 1/2" W.
Printed area measures c. 8" H x 5 1/2" W
Back panels are printed with further promotional text, including photographic offset images, multiple languages used, just great period stuff.
