Iconographic Encylopaedia. Division V - X. Military Sciences, Naval Sciences, Architecture, Mythology and Religious Rites, The Fine Arts, Technology.
Published 1851, New York by Rudolph Garrigue.
234 engraved plates, six complete suites of plates for the sections of the iconographic encyclopedia which make up the second half of the run (vol. II of 2, each vol. complete unto itself as suites of related plates).Â
Title leaves for each of the six sections followed by an unbroken series of beautifully detailed engraved plates as follows:
Military Sciences: 51 plates / Naval Sciences: 32 plates/ Architecture: 60 plates/ Mythology & Religious Rites: 30 plates/ Fine Arts: 26 plates /Â Technology (Railways, Canals, Industrial and Agricultural machines, mining): 35 plates.
All the plates are iconic and epitomize the visual and intellectual state of representation at this historical moment. Virtually every sheet would be worthy of framing for display.
Attractive antiquarian 1/2 leather binding, oblong format, smooth spine, gilt title lettering, gilt bands, cloth covers.
Book is physically old and shows some clear signs of handling and time. Front cover detached, front joint broken. Book is being offered as a collection of plates.
Binding well age worn but still appealing, leather dried and scuffed, front cover loose and almost detached, book remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, some minor light spotting or small thumb soiling from browsing, internally book and all plates remain mostly clean, tight and sound. A massive oblong plate book which has been taken care of, but may/ does not look like new. Large heavy oversized volume, essentially a stack of 234 engraved plates within covers.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.Â
Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this great plate book as it survives. If you do the math, the price per engraved plate is very modest/ low.Â
We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly.
