Jugend

1904, Issue 16

Issued contains 22 pages.

Wonderful females dancing cover.

Some artists names seen within on color illustrations include Douglas Robinson, H. Nisle, Ignatius Taschner, Adolf Munzer, and Leo Putz

Scarce original vintage German periodical.

In Good+ to near VG, mostly very clean condition. Paper is evenly age toned and a bit brittle as always, but the issue is clean and quite well-preserved. Some separation along the spine, a few pages are loose due to the old organic spine glue having dried and crumbled. Small minor edge splits may not be mentioned if they are have been cleanly closed with archival tape and are almost invisible to the eye when browsing the magazine.

Jugend magazine was started in the late 19th century in Germany by the journalist Dr. Georg Hirth. The magazine was markedly progressive in both ideals and graphics. The modern approach and sensibility is found throughout the issues, with wonderful jugendstil aesthetics on almost every page, including the advertisements.

The covers are often like posters, the interior graphics often the ideal of German art noveau graphics. Indeed, the much used term " jugendstil " springs from the title of this magazine. It has been said that the typography and hand-lettered fonts continue to influence computer & graphic design fonts of today.

Issue measures c. 8 7/8" W x  11 1/2" H.
