Lewis & Clark 1812-14 Iceland Napoleonic Era British Periodical 3 v. leather set
Brian DiMambro(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Leather Books, Periodicals, News, Literature, European History).
The Quarterly Review.
Published quarterly, 1812-1814, London & New York for James Eastburn.
3 volumes, each c. 950 pages. Text in English.
Attractive antiquarian 1/2 leather bindings, smooth spines, gilt title lettering, gilt bands & compartment decorations, marbled covers.
Lot is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Wonderful looking bindings with splendid deep range of content including a review of Lewis & Clark's voyage by Gass, a history of Barbadoes, life of John Knox, Sikhs, Goethe on Colours, travels in Iceland, and much more.
Bindings age worn but still appealing, two of the books heavily water stained long ago leaving a tide mark (no smell), leather and joints rubbed and scuffed but still supple, rear joint of 1814 book well split with board loosened, lot remains overall very attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, internally set remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A lot which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.
Still attractive on the shelf. Lot displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.Â
Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this set of 3 books as it survives.Â
We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly.
