The Beauties of History; or, Pictures of Virtue and Vice: Drawn from Examples of Men, Eminent for their Virtues or Infamous for their Vice, by W. Dodd.
Published 1796, London for Vernor and Hood. Second Edition.
300 pages. Text in English. Engraved frontis and half title. Well illustrated throughout with wonderful Bewick woodcut engravings (not found in the earlier version).
Rare and desirable juvenile book, instructing youth on life morals, lessons, conduct and the art of thinking correctly.
Period 1/2 leather binding, slightly raised & gilt bands, gilt title lettering on contrasting black leather label, marbled covers and end papers.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding gently age worn, leather rubbed but still supple, joints slightly scuffed, front joint cracked with board slightly loosened but still firmly attached, remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, light to moderate scattered age spotting, internally still well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this antique juvenile book survives.
