The Life of Spencer Compton, Eighth Duke of Devonshire, by Bernard Holland.
Published 1911, London by Longmans, Green and Co.
2 Volumes, each c. 500 pages. Frontis portraits protected by original tissue guards. Fold out map at the rear of volume one. Illustrated throughout.
Stamped bindings signed by MacDonald, NY.
Period 1/2 red leather bindings, raised and gilt bands, gilt title lettering, floral Art Nouveau style gilt decorated compartments, top edges gilt.
Some scuffing, splitting and slight weakening to front joints and covers, but bindings remain clean, tight, and sound, covers still well and firmly attached. Some staining at corners and lower joints, small chipping to spine heads, mostly gentle signs of age, time and handling.
Interior clean, tight, square and sound. Paper gently uniformly age toned, largely free of any age spotting. Any age flaws are easy to overlook or forgive.
A fine and handsome set on the shelf, uncommon in nice period leather bindings like these.
Books measure: 9 1/8" H X 6" W.
Set along the shelf measures: 4 1/4". Thick heavy books.
