An actual piece of American history issued during Reconstruction. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images, issued contemporary to the events. Full page image of the GOP party symbol elephant.

Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper. An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue.

During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era. Remarkable double page centerfold capturing racial tension of this time, plus a full page double image relating to the Indian War in the Black Hills of Dakota.

Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued.

Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display.

Nast cartoon shows a large Republican elephant "The Elephant Walks Around - and the Still Hunt is Nearly Over". A famous Black-related Nast double page centerfold: "He Wants A Change Too" showing a Black with a rifle.

Great half page: 'The Indian War -Deadwood City, Black Hills of Dakota" and half page; "The Indian War - A Sick Soldier on a Travau." plus two half-page illustrations on: "The Centennial - Bent-wood Furniture, Austrian Section, Main Building" and "The New York Aquarium."
