Ornithology and Oology of New England: Containing Full Descriptions of the Birds of New England, and Adjoining States and Provinces Arranged by Long-Approved Classifications and Nomenclature, by Edward Samuels.
Published 1868, Boston, by Nichols and Noyes.
587 pages. Text in English. Illustrated throughout with 28 very fine color lithographed plates printed by Bufford's of Boston. Each plate is lovely, bird species are carefully rendered in detail within naturalistic settings, 4 plates showing many likely now rare/ extinct bird eggs in color.

Beautifully re-backed in the past, retaining the original period 1/2 leather spine and covers, original gilt title lettering, original marbled covers and end papers, a lovely book which has been made sturdy for handling and browsing the color plates.

Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.

Binding gently age worn, leather rubbed but still supple, joints slightly scuffed, remains overall sound, tight, attractive as an object. The re-case and binding is very well done by a master of the craft, the hinges now very strong and likely to last another 100 years, book closes and feels as if it was as issued.

Text block paper is gently to moderately age toned, plates all retain tissue guards and are fresh and clean in appearance. Book is internally well preserved, tight, sound.

Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this very nice mid-19th century color plate book survives.

Book Measures c. 10 3/4" H x 8 1/2" W.
