KAART van een gedeelte van de Kust van Nieuw Zuid Wales, Van Kwelling Kaap tot de Endeavour-Straat door Luit. J. Cook. 1770.

Issued Leiden & Amsterdam, 1798 by Honkoop, Allart & Van Cleef.

Engraved by C. v. Baarsel.

Very early Dutch printing of this important Capt. Cook map of the coast of New South Wales in Australia. Beautifully engraved version for an early appearance in Holland of Capt. Cooks first voyage. Oriented with north to the right.

Stunningly detailed, the first accurate charting of this part of Australia by a Western explorer. Cook called this area "the Labyrinth" due to the treacherous nature of the reefs, and indeed his ship was damaged so severely here in early June his crew had to jettison their guns, ballast, casks and other articles in order to float their ship clear.

In VG to VG+ mostly clean condition. Map remains fresh and clean, a fine impression from the plate.

Sheet measures c. 14 1/2" W x 13 1/4" H.

Engraved area measures c. 12 3/4" W x 11 1/2" H.

Folio. Original fold lines as issued.
