Pacific Ocean showing exploration tracks Australia unknown 1806 H. Tanner map
Brian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & PrintsChart of the Pacific Ocean.
(Old Maps, 19th Century Maps, Pacific Ocean, New Zealand, Australia, Polynesia, Indonesia, Japan, Alaska, Central America).
Issued 1806, Philadelphia. Engraved by H. Tanner.
Scarce early 19th century American engraved map with attractive hand color.
Interesting how the southern coastline of Australia is incomplete, reflecting lack of certainty on the part of the cartographer when the map was produced. Also, Van Diemen's Land (an island) is shown as potentially part of the continent, which it is not. Tracks of early exploration voyages labelled across the ocean areas.
Nice looking example, extraneous fold lines down the original fold lines, pleasing age patina, any minor age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Original fold lines as issued.
Sheet measures c. 11" H x 17 1/2" W.
Engraved area measures c. 9 3/4" H x 15 1/4" W.
