Pompeiana: The Topography, Edifices, and Ornaments of Pompeii, The Result of Excavations Since 1819, by Sir William Gell.
Published 1832, London by Jennings and Chaplin. First Edition.
2 volumes. 198, 207 pages. Text in English. Profusely illustrated throughout with steel engraved plates, some folding, couple plates in color.
A splendid pictorial set relating to the archaeology of this Italian site, very pleasing.
Attractive antiquarian 1/2 leather bindings, smooth spines, gilt title lettering & spine decorations, marbled covers & end papers, profusion of engraved plates.
Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time.
Bindings gently age worn but still appealing, leather and joints slightly rubbed but still supple, set remains overall very attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, plates moderately spotted/ foxed, internally books remain mostly clean, tight and sound. A set which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.
Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this fine set as it survives.
We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly.
