General Report on the Punjab Oil Lands, by Benjamin Smith Lyman, Mining Engineer, Public Works Dept. of the Government of India.
1870, Lahore, Printed at the Government Press, Public Works Department.
Important and rare work published in India by this famous 19th century American geologist and surveyor (see wiki). This work contains the first published contour maps to show geological structure.
Poor physical condition. Originally string tied binding with plain cardboard covers, now all text sheets loose, maps all split down middle centerfold, covers detached and well edge worn, overall age toning or surface staining. Early manuscript title to front cover.
Printed on relatively thin paper, the folding maps have all split along their original fold lines and many now display small chipping to the edges with in spots tiny loss of printed area. Video shows condition. It seems likely any surviving example might display similar condition issues due to paper used.
Rare in any condition.
Books contains ten (10) folding maps following the 46 pp. explanatory text section [plus 3 pp. Supplement to the Report].
Book measures: 13 3/4" H X 9" W.
