Sibille Samienne.
(Female Sibyl Carrying a Crown of Thorns as Jesus Hangs from the Cross in the Background).
Issued France, Paris, c.1680-1700, engraved by Mariette.
Fine and uncommon 17th century engraved allegorical print. With beautiful hand color.
The Greek Sibyl appears to be carrying a lily and Jesus' crown of thorns, hinting at the crucifiction and resurrection although she is first associated with prophesizing his birth in a stable.
Print remains well preserved, light wrinkling or edge wear, overall still very pleasing example. Some light age wear or surface spotting/ soiling which is visible within the scan.
Sheet measures c. 14 7/8" H x 9 1/2" W.
Printed area measures c. 13 3/4" H x 8 1/4" W.
