Map of the State of Maine
Compiled Drawn & Published
From Official Plans and Actual Surveys
Issued Houlton, Maine, 1884 George Colby.
Engraved by Wm. Bracher.
Monumental and very detailed late-19th century lithographed map with original, full hand color. Printed on sturdy thin slightly glossy bond paper.
This oversized, large folding 1880's map was issued as a supplemental frontis to some of Colby's state atlases, though it's very unusual to find an example so clean and well-preserved. Most surviors show the ravages of time and handling due to their fragile nature, often age discolored, with long tears, stains, hard wrinkling, missing margins, etc. This example remains exceptionally clean and fresh looking.
Minor light toning and small scattered age spotting as typical for most maps of this vintage, perhaps small minor paper flaws, there is some soft old diagonal creasing to panesl, but to our eyes and for most people, an entirely acceptable and nice looking example of this antique map. Despite whatever flaws exist, still far superior example to those relative few which do survive.
Original fold line(s) as issued.
Sheet measures c.25 1/2" x 34"
Printed area measures c. 24 1/2" x 33"
