Printed ca.1847-52, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Engraved by Baarsel & Tuyn
Unique antique folding linen-backed city plan comprised of 12 separate sheets attached to a sturdy canvas backing and edged in green linen, as issued. With original hand color.
An extensive register below the map in 8 columns locates over 200 individual features including "straaten, stegen, bruggen, gebouwen, bolwerk, enz."
A detailed, scarce and interesting Dutch map which could readily be collected on it's own merits, displayed or given as a present.
In Good antiquarian condition , mostly clean overall, light minor age dustiness or light surface wear, small scattered spotting or age soiling as seen, two names within register removed long ago (apparently as issued and seen on all examples according to Donkersloot- de Vrij), small dark ink stain at bottom right in name register, matching small ink stain facing it one panel above, light browning and age toniong along fold-lines, original fold-lines as issued, overall the map is still very attractive -- map has been priced according to this condition as described.
Very scarce mid-19th century linen backed Dutch city plan.

Donkersloot-de Vrij, Kaarten van Utrecht , 28(2)- noting it is the second state of a map first issued 1839 by Nicolaas van der Monde". Also notes it can be dating by the appearance of certain buildings built throughout the 1840's into the early 1850's. The changes found in the name register below the map are also noted as appearing on all known examples.
Map is an interesting variant of an almost identical paper map from 1839 by Nicolaas van der Monde 28(1) (also see Het Utrechts Archief, collectie beeldmateriaal, T.A. Ab 113). This slightly later version has many additions found, indicating new building construction in areas such a "Bemuurde" at middle left and the "Vaartsche Rijn" at lower right, etc.
