WATER BITTER NUT HICKORY
Juglans aquatica

(American Forest Tree - Sylva)

Printed Paris: 1857;  for Rice & Hart of Philadelphia.

Engraved by Bessin.

Very fine original antique botanical engraving with original hand color heightened with gum arabic.

A very well engraved and beautifully printed botanical image from the mid-19th century by a master of engraving technique.

This particular type of highly skilled hand engraving upon metal plate printing process is now essentially extinct as method of reproducing popular scientific images, rendering this printed leaf an interesting original artifact from a past era.

Printed on quality heavy stock period paper which may show typical gentle signs of age, perhaps some minor light spotting or foxing, but retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness.

In near Very Good or better antiquarian condition, mostly very clean overall, trivial minor age dustiness or surface wear -- please inspect enlargable photo closely, any noteworthy flaws to the printed surface area should be noticeable within picture provided.

[ note: We grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws. We are doing our best to show & describe this item so you are happy when it arrives ].

The printed area remains visually pleasing and well preserved.

Overall a nice impression of an original and interesting antique printed image that any collector, curator or institution would be happy to own or display.

Sheet measures c. 6 5/8" W x  10 1/2" H.

Printed area measures c. 5 1/4" W x  7 3/4" H.
